Tutor and Mentor Training

Tutor and Mentor Training

Our tutors and mentors have a variety of qualifications and a wide range of experience of working with young people. They are all CRB police checked, and we keep them up to speed with changes in the National Curriculum, through the regular in-house training days we run.

However, we are often asked if our tutors and mentors have attended any courses which would give them guidance in working on a one-to-one basis with young people. At present, there is no recognised training or qualifications in this field and therefore we are in the process of developing our own course, which we hope to be accredited through the OCN (Open College Network).

The course will be delivered part-time, in the evenings. Sessions will last for two hours and we anticipate that there would be 12 sessions in all. In addition, there will be regular tutorials, observations and presentations. We will also bolt on further courses offered by local boroughs, such as ‘Child Protection’ and courses offered by the Community Organisation’s Forum (based in Tower Hamlets) such as ‘Conducting Risk Assessments.’

Through a series of seminars, workshops and lectures, we will deepen each tutor/mentor’s understanding of what is expected from them, and refresh their knowledge of methods of working, to enable young people to achieve more successfully.

Examples of some of the subjects covered on the course will be;
Target Setting, Writing Schemes of Work, Assessment and Reporting, Dealing with Challenging Behavior, Embedding Literacy and Numeracy, Using Resources Effectively, Structuring Lessons to Achieve AQA Unit Awards.

To ensure that that the course is delivered to a high standard, we will only commission visiting lecturers and consultants who are well qualified. In particular, we will engage lecturers who have been teaching on PGCE courses in universities and college teacher departments.

The quality of the course will be evaluated through our Board of Trustees, who hold senior positions in education and the arts.

The course is expected to run in 2009 and tutors and mentors can register their interest by emailing Phil Evans.
