Spielwerks Heimat Project

Spielwerks Heimat Project

During the weekend of the 28/04/06, members from The Complete Works were invited over to Germany for a weekend of improvisation, workshops and meetings hosted by Spielwerk Theatre Company alongside other European companies.
The workshops were based around the idea of ‘heimat’ (loosely translated as ‘home’) and the countries Austria, Bulgaria, England, Germany and Italy were represented.
Through improvisation and movement activities, a number of issues were raised such as a country’s national identity, its role in Europe and the constant concern of conflict in an anxious and tentative world.
Also addressed were more private thoughts around the topic of home. Members from each company brought and discussed something that reminded them of home. From teddybears to Austrian chocolates, German philosophy to personal photographs, the workshops revealed how differently people think about the topic of home.
The weekend was a big success and this was underlined on the final day when each company combined to create a performance, illustrating some of the improvisations that had taken place in the days beforehand.
The weekend allowed The Complete Works to make links with other theatre companies from other European countries and they will meet again in September, this time in Vienna, to discuss the ways in which they can work together in the future.
