Tuition, Mentoring and Communication Activities

TCW tutors have been particularly noted for their ability to motivate disruptive and disaffected young people. The interest in the education services the company provides has been strong and the quality of the work undertaken has been constantly praised. We believe this is achieved by providing a service that is not only educationally valuable, but also relevant to current developments in the curriculum. Using an inclusive approach and employing interactive techniques, we seek to enable all participants to take ownership of the creative process.

Our tutors possess a range of professional qualifications and skills, ensuring that each student’s educational needs are well catered for. Many have a drama-based background, which also allows for further creative opportunities, in role-play and in presentations. Targets are set between students and their tutors, and student progress is regularly evaluated. Reports are written at regular intervals, in accordance with National Curriculum levels of attainment. In addition, the company assesses each student’s ability to concentrate during sessions, their developments in confidence and their continued commitment to their studies.

Examples of groups of students we have successfully worked with include looked after young people, care leavers and young offenders, people with disabilities and difficulties, special educational needs, medical conditions and emotional and behavioural difficulties.

Student requirements have included: Literacy, Numeracy, English as an Additional Language (EAL), Social and Personal Development, Interview and Presentation Skills. Formal examination subjects from GCSE to A’level, NVQ and GNVQ have included: Maths, English, General Science, Geography, Physics, Accounts, Business Studies, Economics, Computer Skills, Music, Art and Drama.

Tutors and Mentors are also available to attend meetings and reviews and can liaise with schools and other organisations which take responsibility for the welfare of the students. We also run staff training courses, to highlight the importance of education and to equip them with a range of educational tools and strategies. For further details on Professional Training and Development, please see the Consultation area of our work.

Mentoring

Mentors aim to develop and enhance the life chances of students and re-ignite their interest in education, enabling them to either access and progress further along the education ladder, or focus on the career opportunities open to them. Mentoring sessions are delivered in a variety of ways and are structured to gain the maximum level of attention from each student during the time they work with us.

E-Study

This service has been developed to cater for students who live in remote locations, or who find it difficult to travel to sessions. Work is set and evaluated through e-mail, by tutors who are monitored by a distance learning co-ordinator. The educational aims and objectives relate directly to the individual needs of each student and targets are set to motivate students to succeed. In addition, students are able to display their work on the company website.

Associated Projects

Students may also have the opportunity to become involved in other activities, commissioned by organisations who work in partnership with us. Some examples of past projects include the involvement in conferences, theatre and music events, the design of artwork material for posters and cards, scripted material for video and DVD presentations, songs and poems for the creation of a CD. For further details, please see the Theatre, Music, Film and Consultation areas of work undertaken by the company.

Phonics International

In February 2009, The Complete Works approached Debbie Hepplewhite to enquire about her online synthetic phonics programme, Phonics International, which is a reading, spelling and writing programme. It is available online to download as paper-based resources and also provides audio-visual resources and presentation videos. Debbie provides helpful free material, including many versions of The Alphabetic Code Overview Chart and other ‘start-up’ resources, to enable common understanding amongst educators, students and students’ parents in the logic of the English reading and writing system, to inform them about the synthetic phonics teaching principles – and to enable transparent review of the programme.
Debbie responded to our inquiry by sponsoring The Complete Works. She has provided free access to her programme for all TCW tutors with a view to building up a relationship with TCW – providing support as requested and welcoming feedback from tutors. Using an evidence-based teaching method, teaching effectively and measuring effectiveness is something which is very close to Debbie’s heart!

Before long, one of our tutors, Pippa Gross, had this to say to encourage other TCW tutors to use Phonics International for their basic literacy skills teaching:

“Phonics International – A REALLY GOOD Reading/Hand-writing/Spelling Programme
Phonics International is a comprehensive programme which will help your student at whatever age or level they are at reading, writing and spelling. It is also very good for speakers of other languages. Many primary schools pupils are now using a phonics system to teach reading, writing and spelling and the PI scheme has seen great success rates in schools.
How it works:
The scheme builds up difficulty unit by unit and also includes an Early Years pack for pre-primary school pupils or primary pupils with a lower level of reading ability. It is based on teaching a sound – for example /s/ and then the corresponding ‘code’ or letter combinations. So, the /s/ sound corresponds to words spelt with _s, _ce, _ss, _sc, such as snake, palace, glass, scissors etc. This systematic approach to reading and spelling means that pupils learn to analyse the sounds in words rather than guessing, and as a result, they become more confident readers and spellers.
You don’t have to follow the whole programme – you can dip in and out depending on the needs of your particular student.
Resources:
PI has done all the work for you. There are masses of resources – hundreds of potential lessons all ready and waiting! They are really colourful, appealing to learners and systematically organised. You can decide to teach the /s/ sound one lesson and print out the related activity sheet, flash card, worksheets on handwriting, story writing and it’s all there in abundance. Read the Overview and Guidance Booklet first to get more of an idea of how to teach the scheme.”

The Complete Works team looks forward to continue utilising the Phonics International programme and further developing our good relationship with Debbie.
